The Alvin, Texas, native owns a 3.87 grade-point average in biology. She is a six-time member of Athletics Director's Honor Roll and Dean's List, as well as a two-time member of the President's List. In addition, she is a two-time member of the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll and recipient of 2003-04 OVC Medal of Honor, given annually to the student-athlete who achieves the highest GPA in a conference-sponsored sport. She also is APSU's 2004-05 nominee for the prestigious OVC Scholar-Athlete Award, the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes.
On the court, Burkhalter has been a steady defensive presence during her career, leading the Lady Govs in digs per game each of her first three seasons, including a 501-dig effort during her junior year that was the seventh-best single-season effort in APSU history. However, this season she has recorded career single-season bests in kills and is well on her way to a career best in attack percentage. She also became the fifth member of APSU's elite double-grand club, reaching both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher.
