Ashland City resident establishes 2 scholarships at Austin Peay

An Ashland City resident has established two scholarships for students to attend Austin Peay State University.

The John E. Mayfield Endowed Scholarship is a $1,200 annual award given to a student from Cheatham County who is seeking a bachelors degree in any major. The student may attend APSU either full time or part time, and preference will be given to adult learners or students with established financial need. This award can be renewed.

The second award, the John E. Mayfield Charitable Foundation Endowed Scholarship, will be awarded to a full- or part-time incoming freshman from Cheatham County in any major. The amount of the yearly award is $500 and is a one-time award.

The endowed scholarship is the 12th established by Mayfield, who said the awards help students who otherwise might not have an opportunity.

“I had the opportunities during my college years, and I didn't take advantage of them,” Mayfield said. “I realize there are many people who have the desire to better themselves but do not have the resources to accomplish their goal.”

The John E. Mayfield Charitable Foundation was established in 1996 to assist Cheatham County citizens and charities through scholarships and grants.
