Sherryl A. Byrd, a native of Wilson County, will assume her new position Sept. 5. For the past nine years, she has been assistant vice chancellor for student affairs at Auburn University-Montgomery (Ala.), the metropolitan campus of Auburn University.

“I'm looking forward to getting back to middle Tennessee,” Byrd said. “I've been gone long enough.”

Byrd will succeed Dr. Diane Berty, who served in the position on an interim basis.

Byrd earned both her master's and bachelor's degrees from Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville. She received her doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Alabama.

In her current position, Byrd is responsible for AUM's academic and personal support services, enrollment services, financial aid and housing and student life. Much of her responsibilities at AUM will be similar to those as associate vice president at APSU.

Also, Byrd said the similarities between AUM and APSU will help her in the transition. Like APSU, Auburn is a regional public institution that focuses on teaching. Both institutions have military ties; APSU serves the education needs for active duty and retired personnel at Fort Campbell, Ky., and AUM services Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala.

“Those similarities, I think, will help me to adjust, but I am looking forward to being at Austin Peay,” Byrd said.

Byrd's previous work experience includes coordinator of student services at Patterson State Technical College, Montgomery, Ala.; student development counselor, PSTC; director of student activities at Jacksonville (Ala.) State University; and coordinator of student activities at the University of South Alabama, Mobile.

Byrd is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the Southern Association for College Student Affairs, the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and the Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. — Melony Leazer
