ABLE Initiative

The ABLE INITIATIVE is a group of 35 incoming freshmen male ABLE participants selected to participate in the “ABLE first-year experience” and commit to developing their academic, leadership, and professional skills. The members of this cohort are encouraged to build a connection and support each other throughout their college careers.

What is the “ABLE first-year experience”?

The ABLE cohort “first-year experience” is collection of experiences designed to help the members succeed in their first year of college. It will consist of the following:

  • Academics- Assist participants in learning their academic strengths and weakness to get the best academic results
  • Leadership- Help participants increase their leadership skills by empowering them to strive for excellence to influence others
  • Professionalism- Enhance the professional readiness of each participant to help them transition into their chosen careers after graduation.
  • Give each participant a voice
  • Address academic issues if needed
  • Recognize and seize opportunities to grow and develop
  • Motivate participants to seek leadership opportunities on campus
  • Encourage participants to take lessons learned and impact them into the next generation of young people
  • Big Brother - 12 upperclassmen selected to serve as peer mentors to ABLE cohort.
  • The ABLE - 35 incoming freshmen students selected to participate in the first-year ABLE experience. Incoming freshmen are selected in May and June each academic year.
  • Must be a registered student at APSU
  • Must self-identify as male and African American
  • Must attend at least two monthly meetings/workshops
  • Must attend mandatory study hall at least 5 hours a week
