Certificates/Training

The Academic Support Center's tutor training program has been certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Our tutors can earn up to level III certification (Certified Master Tutor). As part of our training program, our employees must undergo the following training.

Tutors
Tutors undergo 10 hours of training prior to working with students, followed by observation and feedback by their supervisor during actual tutor sessions. Training includes:
  • Learning theory
  • Learning styles & study skills
  • Role modeling
  • Dealing with Harassment
  • Tutor responsibilities, guidelines, and strategies
Certified
Tutors
After tutors have been trained and conduct 50 hours of tutoring, they become Certified Tutors.
Advanced
Certified
Tutors
Certified Tutors undergo 10 additional hours of training and must conduct an additional 50 hours of tutoring in order to become Advanced Certified Tutors. Training includes:
  • Review of topics previously covered
  • using probing questions to assess comprehension
  • Using technology to support online learners and face-to-face clients in tutoring sessions
  • Supporting students with disabilities
  • Tutoring topics specific to the subjects they support
Master
Certified
Tutors
Advanced Certified Tutors undergo 10 additional hours of training and must conduct an additional 50 hours of tutoring in order to become Master Certified Tutors. Training includes:
  • Review of topics previously covered
  • Academic Support Center administration
  • The role of learning centers in higher education
  • Training and supervising other tutors
  • Group management and dynamics
  • Working with target populations
SLA
Leaders
SLA Leaders undergo 2 days of training prior to each semester. Training includes:
  • Classroom management
  • Conducting effective workshops
  • Lesson planning
  • Working with students with disabilities
  • Using technology to support instruction
  • Learning styles & study skills
  • Identifying and working with distressed students
  • Characteristics of ann SLA program
  • Selected topcs for specific courses supported
