Exam 5 Review: Chapter 27 Penis

penis - The male organ of copulation; it also serves as the male organ of urinary excretion; it is composed of a root, a body, and a head, the glans penis, covered by a protective mucous sheath, the foreskin = prepuce; it contains the spongy urethra and three masses of erectile tissue, the corpus spongiosum surrounding the urethra, and the larger pair of corpora cavernosa above; it is homologous with the clitoris of the female.
corpora cavernosa penis - The two larger dorsal masses of erectile tissue which run the length of the penis; when the capillary beds of the erectile tissue are allowed to fill with blood, they create the erection necessary for penetration of the vaginal canal during coitus.
corpus spongiosum penis - The smaller median, ventral mass of erectile tissue which runs the length of the penis, surrounding the spongy urethra; it is expanded at both ends to form the bulbus penis at the base and the glans penis at the head; when the capillary beds of the erectile tissue are allowed to fill with blood, it assists in creating the erection necessary for penetration of the vaginal canal during coitus.
glans penis - The conical expansion of the corpus spongiosum which forms the head of the penis; it is richly supplied with sensory nerve endings; it is covered by a protective mucous sheath, the foreskin = prepuce.
prepuce = foreskin - A cuff or sheath of loose skin, lined by a mucous membrane, which covers the glans penis; it folds back to expose the more sensitive skin of the glans itself during intercourse; it may be removed by a procedure termed a circumcision; the medical necessity of the procedure is questionable, but many cultures have practiced circumcision for centuries.
erectile tissue - A specialized type of capillary bed which has numerous vascular sinuses which may become dilated and engorged with blood under certain circumstances, adding size and relative rigidity to the organs or tissues it supports; in humans, erectile tissue is found primarily in the penis in males and in the clitoris, labia, and associated tissues at the vulva, in females. and small amounts are found in the nipples and nasal passages of both sexes; engorgement of these tissues follows sexual arousal; this tissue is regulated by the Autonomic Nervous System.
erection - The firm and enlarged condition of a body organ or part when the erectile tissue surrounding it becomes filled with blood, especially the condition of the penis, clitoris, and nipples during sexual arousal; this process is regulated by the Autonomic Nervous System.
ejaculation - A sudden, forceful act of expulsion of a liquid from the duct of a tubular organ, such as the discharge of semen from the urethra of the penis at the climax of sexual intercourse; premature ejaculation is a common form of sexual dysfunction in males; this process is regulated by the Autonomic Nervous System.
emission - A general term for something which is sent out from its source; with regard to the penis, a nocturnal emission is an involuntary ejaculation of semen during sleep, often accompanied by an erotic dream; it is a normal experience for boys in adolescence which ceases as one gets older; this process is regulated by the Autonomic Nervous System. nickname - wet dream.
circumcision - The act of cutting off the prepuce or foreskin of males, or the internal labia of females; a Jewish and Muslim religious rite performed on a male 8 days after birth; the medical necessity of the procedure is questionable, but many cultures have practiced circumcision for centuries.
