Exam 2 Review:  Chapter 8:  Synovial Joints & Bursae

articular capsule - The connective tissue covering and boundary to a synovial joint, consisting of an outer fibrous capsule and an inner synovial membrane.

fibrous capsule - The outer dense collagenous covering of and external boundary to the articular capsule of a synovial joint which supports the internal synovial membrane.

ligament - A sheet or band of tough, dense fibrous connective tissue connecting bones or cartilages at a joint or supporting an internal organ in a body cavity.

synovial membrane - The inner layer of the articular capsule of the synovial joint which is a closed sac of areolar connective tissue lined internally by specialized synovial cells which secrete synovial fluid into the joint cavity.

synovial fluid - The viscous lubricating joint fluid, a plasma filtrate rich in hyaluronic acid, secreted by the synovial membrane of synovial joints, tendon sheaths and bursae.

meniscus = articular disc- A fibrocartilage pad or disk that acts as a cushion between the hyaline cartilage articular surfaces at the ends of bones that meet in certain synovial joints exposed to great mechanical stress; e.g., the temperomandibular joint and the tibiofemoral joint.

bursae - Any sac or saclike cavity; lined with a synovial membrane that secretes a viscous lubricating synovial (bursal) fluid, interposed between tendons and bony prominences or at other points of friction between moving structures.

tendon sheath - A tube-like cavity lined with a synovial membrane that secretes a viscous lubricating synovial fluid, covering regions of tendons at  points of friction between moving structures.

1.  Sketch and label the parts of a synovial joint.
