Fall Meeting To Highlight Workshops of Faculty Governance

The Tennessee Conference of the American Association of University Professors will hold its Fall Meeting on Saturday, November 1  at University Hall on the campus of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.

The schedule includes an informal coffee hour from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., the morning session featuring the guest speaker from 10:00 until noon, the luncheon from noon until 1:00, and the business session from 1:00 until 3:00.  During its summer meeting, the Executive Committee of the Tennessee State Conference decided to focus on practical workshops on governance similar to leadership conferences conducted around the country by AAUP. The morning session will thus break into four working groups: 1) budget, 2) curricular matters, 3) tenure and faculty appointments, and 4) appointment of administrators and administrative evaluation.

Instead of our usual speaker, the Conference is delighted to have Dr. Martin Snyder serve as leader/facilitator of these sessions. A graduate of Loyola College in Maryland and Catholic University, Dr. Snyder served for nineteen years as assistant, associate and finally professor of classics at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.  He left Duquesne in 1988 to accept the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut.  In 1990 he was named Provost of Saint Joseph College (West Hartford, Connecticut), a position he held until 1996.  From 1996 to 1999 he served as President of Molloy College in Rockville Centre, New York.  Dr. Snyder's academic interests have focused on the continuity of the classical tradition, particularly in American literature and art.  Since 1999, he has served on the national staff of the AAUP, first as Associate Secretary and Director for Academic Freedom and Professional Standards. He now serves as Director of Planning and Development.

Nonmembers are invited to attend as well.
