Agenda for Fall 2007 Chapter Meeting:
Chapter Meeting: The APSU chapter of AAUP will be meeting at 4:00 pm in Harned 301. As 2007 marks our tenth anniversary as a chapter, we should party. Also, it is necessary to hold chapter elections, particularly for president and secretary. Dick Gildrie will be retiring next summer and will resign as president, effective the end of fall term. Bonnie Hodge, the secretary, is on indefinite leave. Jim Thompson is current vice president and Greg Zieren is treasurer. The executive committee includes Pete Stoddard and Phil Kemmerly. Please “politic” among the chapter membership to find replacements. There are some newly tenured faculty members who have joined the chapter and should be included.
Tennessee Chapter Meeting: the state meeting will be in Memphis on Saturday, October 6th. Please contact Pete Stoddard on making arrangements. These meetings are usually both fun and informative.
Report on Chapter Activities: Because of the administrative transition, things have been relatively quiet since January. We have had three inquiries since the beginning of spring term, 2007, one of which is currently on-going with the new administration and is going quite well. We have also asked the chapter’s legal advisor to look into current law suits involving APSU. His preliminary report is that, on the whole, they do not seem particularly numerous or fraught with threats to academic freedom or tenure. A couple of them remain worrisome, however.
Historical Note: As we celebrate our tenth anniversary, let us take pride in the fact that, soon after our founding, the chapter won the AAUP national Konheim Award for a strong, public defense of academic freedom against a serious threat from the then TBR chancellor and his minions. This spirit is part of our heritage as we go into the next decade.
Richard P. Gildrie, Chapter President
