V-Day
APSU
joined the international V-Day movement in February 2002 with its first two
performances of Eve Ensler's play, "The Vagina
Monologues." The play is produced as part of the
course work for WS 3060: Vagina Monologues. Topics for
the course include domestic violence, representation of
women in the media and art, sexual objectification of
women, the social construction of the veil, women in
prison, the construction of sexual identity, childbirth,
and race and sexuality. Guest speakers are also a part
of the course.
Students organize and display
The Clothesline Project in conjunction with producing the play,
and present research projects on subjects generated by
the course.
In
2007, two
performances generated more than $2000, which was
donated to local organizations which assist female
survivors of violence. The Clarksville office of
the Sexual Assault Center will use its donation
toward counseling scholarships. The Women's Studies Program is
committed to producing the play every year, as the V-Day
campaign urges, "Until the violence stops."
