Austin Peay offers a Bachelor of Arts major in foreign languages with an emphasis in Greek or Latin. The Latin specialization is designed to lead to teacher certification. There is also a major in Classics with a concentration in four areas as listed below. It is possible to obtain enough hours in Latin to have an endorsement for teaching in secondary schools, if your major area of licensure is in another area. We also offer minors in Greek, Latin, and Classical Civilization. Classics students work closely with the university wide honors program.
- Greek--Required for this program are 5 semesters of Greek, as well as three electives chosen from History of Ancient Greece, Ancient Philosophy, Mythology, or Greek Art and Archaeology. Students may, of course, choose to take more coursework in Greek as well.
- Latin--Required for this program are 5 semesters of Latin, as well as three electives chosen from Roman Civilization, History of ancient Rome, Ancient Philosophy, or Mythology. Students may also take more coursework in Latin.
- Classics--In this program, students acquire some facility in both ancient Greek and Latin. Students must take 5 semesters in one language, and 3 in the other. In addition to these courses, students choose one elective from History of Greece or Rome, Ancient Philosophy, Mythology, or Art and Archaeology.
- Classical Civilization--This concentration requires two years of Latin or Greek, or one year of each. The remaining hours are drawn from Ancient History, Ancient Philosophy, Mythology, or Art and Archaeology.
