Grammatical Guidelines

Style Considerations

  • Use the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual as a guide for grammar, spelling, punctuation and usage guidelines. Exceptions:
    • don't use a comma before the "and" in a series.
  • Proofread your work -- especially when you've typed in information. You'll probably catch many of the typos, spelling and punctuation errors. Have someone else proofread your pages whenever possible.
  • Check all links on all pages -- after the page is uploaded to the server.
  • Be consistent. Use the same wording, same navigational icons, etc. throughout a single site.

Dates

Note: While the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual suggests the following formats for months and days of the week, if space allows, you may choose to write out the entire month and/or day. This may make your site more easy to understand for those using screen readers to access your site.

  • When a month is used with a specific date, abbreviate only Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec.. Spell out when using alone, or with a year and no date.
  • When a phrase lists only a month and a year, do not separate the year with commas. When a phrase refers to a month, day and year, set off the year with commas.

January 1972 was a cold month. Jan. 2 was the coldest day of the month. His birthday is May 8. Feb. 14, 1997, was the target date.
