infectious mononucleosis - A common, acute, infectious disease, usually affecting young people, caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) which is transmitted in saliva; characterized by fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, and lymphocyte abnormalities.  nickname -- kissing disease

leukemia - Any of various* acute or chronic neoplastic diseases (cancers) of the bone marrow in which unrestrained proliferation of white blood cells occurs, usually accompanied by an increased WBC count in the peripheral blood, anemia, impaired blood clotting, and enlargement of the lymph nodes, liver, and spleen.  [*Note - Leukemias are classified by the type of leukocyte most prominently involved.]

lymphoma - Any of the various, usually malignant, tumors that arise in the lymph nodes or in other lymphoid tissue; the increase in lymphocytes is often limited to the tissues and not observed in the peripheral blood.

septicemia - Any serious systemic disease caused by virulent pathogenic organisms or their toxins in the bloodstream.  nickname -- blood poisoning
