CLEP - College Level Examination Program®

Brief Description of Exam

The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) gives examinees the opportunity to receive college credit for what they already know by earning university-designated minimum scores on any of 34 examinations. Please refer to the table at the bottom of this page for a list of CLEP exams accepted by APSU and the minimum score requirements for each exam. Please see the Additional Information section below for information applicable to examinees who wish to receive credit at APSU.

Important Policies / Updates

Registration and payment for all CLEP exams must be completed online through http://clep.collegeboard.org/register/exam.  Click on "Create an Account" in the upper right corner of the screen and provide all requested information.  Once you have ordered the test through CLEP and have printed your ticket, you must register online here to schedule your test date and time with APSU.

Some policies regarding CLEP exams are at the discretion of individual colleges and universities, i.e. minimum score requirements, optional essays, and course credits. All candidates must contact their school’s Registrar prior to testing to ensure the CLEP exam they wish to take will meet the recipient school’s requirements. The Testing Center strongly recommends that candidates visit the College Board CLEP Web site to make certain they have the most current information regarding all testing policies and procedures.

Registration Requirements

To register to take a CLEP exam, you must first create an account through www.collegeboard.org/clep.  Click on "Create an Account" in the upper right corner of the screen, then provide all requested information.  On this site you will both register for your CLEP exam and submit the $85 CLEP testing fee payment. The APSU Recipient Code for CLEP is 1028.  You must print your registration ticket to present at the testing center on test day.  Your online registration is valid for six months, during which you may register online here to schedule a time and date for your test.   To see the dates available for CLEP testing at APSU, go to www.apsu.edu/testing/schedule.

Fees / Payment Method / Remittance Policy

$85.00 (to CLEP online) per exam plus a $20.00 APSU fee per exam.  Examinees must pay an additional $10.00 fee if they take the optional written essay component of applicable CLEP exams.  This additional $10 for the essay can be paid on testing day as needed. The $85 exam fee is payable on-line with a credit or debit card during the registration process.  The $20 APSU fee is paid also by credit/debit card during the online APSU registration for a testing date.

Please Note: CLEP exams are funded by the U.S. government through Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) for eligible military examinees. Please visit CLEP for Military Personnel on the College Board Web site for more information. Some veterans are also eligible for CLEP benefits. Please visit CLEP for Veterans on the College Board Web site for more information.

APSU Students: If a candidate has already attempted a college-level course closely aligned with a CLEP exam, the candidate may not take the exam to receive additional credit or replace a grade for that course at APSU. For clarification on this policy, please contact the Office of the Registrar at APSU. APSU students with 60 or more credit hours are not eligible to receive credit for General CLEP exams at APSU; however, APSU students are permitted to take and receive credit for the Subject CLEP exams. The Testing Center strongly recommends that APSU students discuss any potential CLEP examinations with their APSU-assigned advisor and the Office of the Registrar prior to testing to ensure that the satisfactory completion of the CLEP exam(s) will provide the examinee with appropriate, degree-required credits.
