THE COMPASS
ASSESSMENT
Computer-adaptive
Placement Assessment
and Support Services
COMPASS is a
computerized test that provides
important information about
individual skills and preparation
for college-level courses. It is an
untimed, adaptive computer-based
test that measures skills in
reading, writing, and mathematics.
On the reading test, the
student will be given one or more
passages to read, and then will
answer questions about the
passages. The writing test
consists of one or more essays in
which the student will identify and
correct errors in grammar,
punctuation, usage, and style. On
the mathematics test, the
student will solve problems which
measure numerical, prealgebra and
algebra skills. Some of the areas
included on this test are basic
operations with integers, fractions,
and decimals, exponents, ratios and
proportions, percentages and topics
in elementary algebra, intermediate
algebra and coordinate geometry.
Sample questions are available at
the following Web site:
http://www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html.
Those required to complete the
COMPASS assessment:
1.
Prospective students 21 and over
who are applying to Austin Peay and
who cannot provide valid ACT/SAT
scores must complete the entire
COMPASS assessment before being
admitted.
2.
International students
without valid ACT or SAT scores must
complete the entire COMPASS battery
or follow the guidelines for
testing.
3. Transfer students
who lack a high school unit in
English or algebra (regardless of
ACT scores) must complete the
reading and writing subtests or
mathematics subtest as
appropriate.
4.
Transfer
students 21 and older with 11
or fewer hours who cannot provide
proof of valid ACT/SAT scores must
complete the entire COMPASS
assessment.
5. Transfer students
from a regionally accredited
college or university who do not
submit valid ACT or SAT scores and
have not earned college-level,
algebra-based mathematics or English
composition credits must complete
the COMPASS assessment in the
appropriate areas.
Please pay
close attention to the following
important information:
·
Only students who
have submitted an application
to the APSU Office of Admissions
will be allowed to take the COMPASS
assessment.
·
You must bring a
photo I.D. and APSU I.D. number in order
to test. No one will be admitted to
the testing lab without the above
identification, such as a driver’s
license, military I.D. card or
school I.D. card.
·
An on-screen
calculator is available for use
during the mathematics test, but you
may bring your own calculator,
provided it is not a TI-89 or
TI-92 graphing calculator.
·
Allow yourself
approximately two hours to
complete the entire test.
Students who
are unable to test by computer
because of special circumstances
must telephone the Testing Center
at (931) 221-6269 to schedule
the ASSET paper-and-pencil test.
Testing Dates:
http://www.apsu.edu/testing/schedule.htm
Note: Students
required to take COMPASS for
admission to the University will not
be charged.
COMPASS Challenge/Retest
APSU
students who have been placed into
remedial courses (DSPW 0700, DSPM
0700, DSPR 0700) and/or
developmental reading (DSPR 0800)
based on ACT scores may challenge
placement by taking the COMPASS
assessment. Only one challenge is
allowed and it must be completed
before the first day of class; a $20
fee will be charged for the
assessment. The highest score(s)
from both attempts will be used to
place students into courses.
Students attending a Summer or
Winter Welcome program will not be
allowed to challenge on that day,
but must contact the Testing Center
at (931) 221-6269 to schedule a
date/time.
APSU students who are required to
take the COMPASS assessment as part
of admission requirements and have
reason to believe that they have
been inaccurately placed in one or
more remedial/developmental courses
(DSPW 0700, DSPM 0700, DSPR
0700/0800) may retake the COMPASS
assessment after 30 days. Only one
retest is allowed and it must be
completed before the first day of
class; a $20 fee will be charged for
the assessment. The highest score(s)
from both attempts will be used to
place students into courses. A
COMPASS retest may be scheduled by
calling the Testing Center at (931)
221-6269.
Students whose admission assessment
scores place them in enhanced
sections of English and/or
mathematics will not use COMPASS as
an additional assessment.
Once students have matriculated into
a specific remedial/developmental
subject sequence, they will not be
allowed to take the COMPASS
assessment in that area.
COMPASS
scores are valid for three years.
If you have any
questions or need more information,
please contact the Testing Center
at (931) 221-6269.
