Study Abroad
Program at APSU - Gambia, Africa
The Study Abroad program in Gambia
is designed to provide students with a hands-on learning experience of African politics
and culture. The five-week summer program will provide an historical and
institutional approach. Through this approach, students will examine, discuss,
study, experience the most basic human institutions: The family, religion, clinic,
education, industry and government.
Students will be living
primarily in traditional homes during the duration of their stay, having the opportunity
to experience all aspects of the traditional extended family, from the extend of the
family input in relation to the village and the community input in relationship to the
state.
The program is supplemented
with activities and field trips to the sites of historical and cultural importance;
Juffureh (Home of Kunta Kinte), James Island and Janjanburi (once locations of old slave
forts).
Cultural programs and
entertainment are offered through song, dance, plays and observation of rituals in
tradition.
