Student Life and Engagement is excited to offer an updated and expanded Leadership Certificate program to APSU students beginning Fall 2017 semester.

The certificate requirements will include demonstrating a dedication to developing leadership skills through participation in a variety of seminars, workshops, opportunities to serve, and roles on campus. Four active participation levels can be achieved. There is also a new option for students with challenging schedules or those completing their education entirely online. Student Organizations can now become "GovsLEAD Certified" with a level aimed a group participation. 

Apply to enter the Explorer Certificate level within the first four weeks of the semester

Complete 10 hours of service, approved and tracked through the Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement (CSLCE)

Attend and write reflection forms for five Development Programs presented by APSU departments including but not limited to:

  • GovsLEAD
  • Student Life & Engagement
  • Wisdom Walks *
  • Hispanic Cultural Center
  • Adult and Nontraditional Student Center
  • Military Student Center
  • Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center
  • Career Services
  • Greek Life
  • Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement
  • University Recreation

*two Wisdom Walks will count as one program.

Attend and write reflection form for one cultural / diversity program presented by APSU departments including but not limited to:

  • Hispanic Cultural Center
  • Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center
  • Center for Excellence for the Creative Arts
  • Student Life and Engagement
  • Disability Services

Attend annual Spring Unity Speaker presented by Student Life & Engagement

Attend Annual John S. Ziegler Student Leadership Conference

Apply to enter the Strategist Certificate level within the first four weeks of the semester

Obtain the Explorer level Leadership Certificate

Complete 15 hours of service, approved and tracked through the Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement (CSLCE)

Attend and write reflection forms for five Development Programs presented by APSU departments including but not limited to:

  • Student Life & Engagement
  • Wisdom Walks *
  • Hispanic Cultural Center
  • Adult and Nontraditional Student Center

Interview and shadow one leadership mentor for a total of 3 hours* and complete a reflection session with that leadership mentor. 
*The 3 hours should be broken into at least two or more sessions. Leadership mentor selection must be preapproved via application prior to shadowing sessions.

Apply to enter the Scholar Certificate level within the first four weeks of the semester

Obtain the Explorer and Strategist level Leadership Certificates

Complete 20 hours of service, approved and tracked through the Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement (CSLCE) 

Attend and write reflection forms for five Development Programs presented by APSU departments.
*two Wisdom Walks will count as one program.

Attend and write reflection form for one cultural / diversity program presented by an APSU department.

Attend annual Spring Unity Speaker presented by Student Life & Engagement

Attend Annual John S. Ziegler Student Leadership Conference

Interview three APSU professional campus leaders (Faculty / Staff) utilizing set questionnaire and complete reflection forms.

Serve in an APSU Student Leadership Role
ex. Student Organization leader, Hall council leader, Student Worker, Govs Ambassador, etc. Positions must be approved by third week of semester.

Assist in the planning of one GovsLEAD program

Apply to enter the Presidential Certificate level within the first four weeks of the semester

Obtain the Explorer, Strategist, and Scholar level Leadership Certificates

Complete 25 hours of service, approved and tracked through the Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement (CSLCE)

Attend and write reflection forms for five Development Programs presented by APSU departments.
*two Wisdom Walks will count as one program.

Attend and write reflection form for one cultural / diversity program presented by an APSU department.

Attend annual Spring Unity Speaker presented by Student Life & Engagement

 Attend Annual John S. Ziegler Student Leadership Conference

 Design and present one leadership development program to a group of at least 10 attendees.
Presentation could be presented for a student organization, residence life group, conference attendees, local mentoring group, etc. Program and audience must be pre-approved prior to presentation.

Complete a significant leadership experience and 250-word reflection paper.
Experiences must be pre-approved utilizing the appropriate application, including a 250-word statement of explanation and expectation, at least two weeks before beginning experience. Experiences can be through student opportunities at APSU or through community roles. Examples: Organization officer, RA, Peer Leader, Adult Cafe Leader, Alternative Break Trip Leader, Youth Mentor, etc.

 Complete a 250-word reflection paper on entire GovsLEAD experience.

 Obtain and submit one letter of support (250 word minimum) by a mentor, supervisor, faculty or staff member.

Apply to enter the self-directed certificate level at least one week prior to submitting required activities

Complete 10 hours of service, approved and tracked through the Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement (CSLCE)

View and write reflection forms for three leadership development webinars.

Webinars must be 35 minutes in length or longer and pre-approved utilizing appropriate application.
*two TED talks will count as one webinar.

Read and write 250-word reflection on one leadership themed book, preapproved by appropriate application. 
Many titles are available electronically through APSU Library and local libraries at no cost. Title suggestions are available.

Interview and shadow one leadership mentor for a total of 3 hours* and complete a reflection session with that leadership mentor.

Apply to enter the organization certification level within the first four weeks of the semester

Student Organization representative must attend Fall Student Org training meeting organized by Student Organization Council

Complete combined 30 hours of service, where at least three members of the organization worked during each event or project, approved and tracked through the Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement (CSLCE)

 Group attendance and submitted group reflection form to five Development Programs presented by APSU departments including but not limited to:

  • Student Life & Engagement
  • Wisdom Walks *
  • HCC
  • ANTS
  • MSC
  • WNDAACC
  • Career Services
  • Greek Life

Host one leadership development program for organization where at least 60% of members are in attendance.
Program topic and speaker must be pre-approved prior to presentation.
Program assessment forms must be collected from participants and submitted following program. Assistance with topic and presenter is available through SLE.

 

Organizations with 30 or less members are required to have 3 members in attendance at each event.

Organizations with 31 to 60 members are required to have 6 members in attendance at each event.

Organizations with 61 or more members are required to have 9 members in attendance at each event.
