Course Description
Offers teachers and others working with school-age personas and understanding of key health issues. Education and risk reduction strategies are featured.

Lower division course open to all students
Course Objectives
At the completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Understand self esteem issues
2. Identify health risks for smoking
3. Understand drug use and how to prevent it
4. Understand drug prevention
5. Understand stress and how to reduce it
6. Discuss sex-related messages
7. Understand STD's and how to identify them
8. Understand nutrition and how to set-up a nutrition program.

Instructional Procedure
A variety of methods and techniques including lectures, assignments and videos will be used in this class. Each will be part of your evaluation in this class.
Course Evaluation
1 Midterm @ 100 points
1 Final @ 100 points
2 oral assignments @ 10 points each
1 Presentation @ 50 points
6 quizzes @ 5 points each
300 total points
Grades will be based on the following scale:
270 points and above = A
269-240 points = B
239-210 points = C
219-180 points = D
179 and below = F
Description of Grading Assignments and required learning resources
Exams: Midterm and final will be based on readings from the text, lectures and videos and activities presented in class. Exams will be multiple choice. Make-up exams will be given only if student calls before test is given.
Oral assignment: Students will turn in questions and answers regarding each topic. Students will write down as if a student is asking the question and as if the teacher is answering them. There will be two topics with two questions each: one for Grade 3-5 and one for grades 6-8. These must be typed and are worth 10 points each. Further details will be provided.
Presentations: Students are expected to present one activity from one topic covered in class. Further details will be given later in the semester
Attendance: The following points will be deducted from your grade due to absences. There will be no excuses. Tardiness counts as an absence.
2 absences = 10 point deduction
3 absences= 30 point deduction
4 absences=50 point deduction
5 and more=100 point deduction

Academic and Classroom Misconduct
Students are expected to conduct themselves appropriate at all times. Academic and classroom misconduct will not be tolerated. Students must read the A Code of Student Conduct@ in the new student handbook for an understanding of what is expected of them within an academic setting. Due to the large number of students using phones and beepers, students are requested to turn off all electronic devices prior to entering class. Students who do not comply to this policy will be asked to leave. I like children, but do to some conflicts in the past, children are not allowed in the classroom.
Minors in the classroom
