P.E. for the Exceptional Child
1) You will be assigned a disability. You will be asked to give a handout to the class detailing your disability. You need to include topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, etiology, and possible medications. Try and describe important information related to physical education. Also included should be a brief description of your activity. If the activity is in the book you can make it extremely brief and give the page number. The last paragraph should describe how you adapted the game for your disability and explain why you chose these adaptations. Each section should be one paragraph.
2)You are expected to be an expert on your disability. Get at least one outside source about your disability. You will be giving a five-ten minute presentation about your disability to the class. You are allowed to use notes. You be graded on your presentational style. Do not chew gum or wear a hat when you are presenting. Pretend you are doing it as if you were a teacher in class. Do not read your handout to the class. You will be given feedback to help with your presentational style.
3) You want to demonstrate your creativity by adapting the game to overcome some (or all) of the learning deficits of your assigned disability. You need to adapt one piece of equipment for your disability and you need to adapt the rules of the game for this disability. You need to pick a game in which you can adapt a piece of equipment. You will lose 10 points if you do not adapt a piece of equipment. (Note: some disabilities may not have equipment changes such as AIDS, but all disabilities can have rule and teaching strategies adapted to meet the needs of the child).
Assume that this is a regular P.E. class and you are adapting the game so that one or two individuals who have your disability are included into class. Thus, you can either adapt the game so that there is a level playing field for everybody (e.g., blindfold everyone), and/or you can adapt the game so that it helps to diminish the difficulty (e.g., if the disability decreases coordination, then you adapt the game by making the ball bigger).
4) You will be speaking on your disability first, then present the game, and then illustrate how you adapted this game for your assigned disability. You need to make your presentation last approximately 20 minutes.
5) You are running the show. I want to be a participant. Think ahead about all the problems that may occur. Also be concerned with the safety of the participants.
Your presentation will be graded by the following criteria:

Total of 20 points for written material passed out to class (you will be penalized for spelling errors)
Verbal Presentation is worth 80 points
Thus, total points for presentation is 100 points
