Catalog Description: The morphology and physiology of vertebrate development*. 4 Credit Hours. Prerequisite: Biology 1010. www.apsu.edu/records/Bulletin/0001/courses/biology.htm

*NOTE: While vertebrate development will be emphasized, invertebrate development will be examined also.

Course Objectives: By the end of this course students should have:

1. have a sound knowledge of the embryonic stages from gametogenesis to tissue formation.
2. have an understanding of nuclear totipotency, cell determination, cytoplasmic localization, induction, and morphogenesis.
3. have an understanding of the methods that are used by developmental biologists.
4. have an understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying cellular differentiation.

General Education Goals: During this course students will have the opportunity to develop:
1. Skills of inquiry, abstract and logical thinking, and critical analysis;
2. literacy in writing, reading, listening, and speaking;
3. the ability to understand and use numbers and statistics;
4. an understanding of the scientific method;
5. a concentration in a discipline in order to enter a chosen profession, undertake advanced study, or develop an avocation.

These education goals address University General Education Goals 1,2,3,5,10 found on page 12 of the 2002-2003 Undergraduate Bulletin. http://www.apsu.edu/records/bulletin/0203/0203.pdf

Attendance Policy:
1.
Regular attendance is expected and excessive absenteeism will reduce your grade.
2. Lectures, laboratories and other class exercises will not be repeated or made up.
3. Announced tests are not to be missed except for extreme emergencies or institutional excused absences. If you have a documented, excused absence for a test then I will count the percentage grade you earn on the comprehensive final for the missed test grade.

Withdrawal Policy: http://www.apsu.edu/records/calendar/acdcal.htm
August 30th - Last day to drop a course without record.
September 27 - Last day to drop a course with automatic "W".
November 8 - Last day to drop before mandatory grade of "F".

Grading: You will receive one grade for lecture and laboratory. Lecture Grade will be determined by averaging the scores on 4 exams.   Laboratory Grade will be determined by averaging scores on lab reports and quizzes as assigned.  Course grade will then be determined as follows:  (Lecture Average x .75) + (Laboratory Average x .25)
100-90 = A, 89-80 = B, 79-70 = C, 69-60 = D, 59 and below = F
