  • Unit Statement of Purpose

    Our mission is to provide students with a structured, creative environment where they are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, and take risks while acquiring the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to prepare themselves for advance study in liberal arts and careers in studio art, art education, and graphic design. To this end, the department offers art courses for liberal arts students and the following degrees specific to art majors: BA in Art Education, BA in Studio Art, BA in Visual Communication, BFA in Studio Art, BFA in Visual Communication.

  • Unit Objectives for Fiscal Year 2002-03

    Objective 1.1 Provide the space and facilities necessary for the department of art to support an effective teaching environment for its multiple student populations: art majors, education majors, liberal arts core students and numerous community education programs such as Extended Education, Community School for the Arts and High School Upward Bound.
     
    Objective 1.2 Purchase, upgrade, and maintain the equipment required to effectively teach our student populations in both degree seeking and community outreach programs.  
    Objective 1.3 Present a rich program of exhibitions, lectures, and special events that contribute to the cultural climate of the university, the Clarksville community, and the Southeastern region.  
    Objective 1.4 Continue the educational, outreach, and cultural exchange opportunities afforded by the Art House: the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection, the Friends of Photography, and the guest artist residence.  
    Objective 1.5 Begin Artist in Residency Program (2002-03) at the Art House and in Trahern studios  
    Objective 2.1 Provide learning situations where students cultivate personal ideals through the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills.  
    Objective 2.2 Continue to involve students in the maintenance, planning and care of the Trahern studios, classrooms, and common areas.  
    Objective 2.3 Create an advisement strategy for incoming freshman and transfer students. Encourage self-assessment of: interests, creative strengths, and career goals. Help create an individualized 4-5 year course of study for each new student.  
    Objective 2.4 Increase the size, effectiveness and recognition of the Student Art League and student chapters of the National Advertising Federation and the National Association of Art Educators.  
    Objective 3.1 To provide learning situations where students develop a thorough understanding of a specific visual concentration so they may enter a chosen profession.  
    Objective 3.2 To enhance the concept of "whole-student" development through the introduction of interdisciplinary, inter-departmental and cross-university course offerings.  
    Objective 3.3 To build articulation internally and externally  - between APSU and art progarms in other colleges and between the levels of education within the Department of Art - accountability as to content and manual skill abilities.  
    Objective 4.1 To build a strong, nationally recognized collection of public art that will provide inspirational learning situations throughout the campus.  
    Objective 4.2 To strengthen and to enhance the visiblity of the APSU Collections of Art  
    Objective 4.3 To build adequate work, study, and research space for faculty and students in the department of art.  
    Objective 5.1 Continue to build, develop and maintain department web page.  
    Objective 5.2 Increase resources and opportunities for faculty and students to participate in national and international shows, conferences, and residency programs.  
    Objective 5.3 Continue to update and print accurate and visually interesting recruitment publicity about the department of art. Continue College Art Day and the publicity for this recritment program.  
    Objective 6.1 Build the Art Slide Collection holdings in the areas of African , African American, and women artists.  
    Objective 6.2 Sustain Outreach efforts through the Goldsmith Press  
    Objective 6.3 Incorporate the histories of diverse cultures and art making techniques in the studio and lecture courses offered in the Department of Art.  
    Objective 7.1 Achieve NASAD re-accreditation in 2002 -03 Academic Year. Remain in good standing with NASAD  
    Objective 7.2 Review existing programs and concentrations areas for content, discipline currency, and enrollment trends. Review need for Master's Degree program  
    Objective 7.3 Build and maintain support from art alumni - use alumni input as assessment and enhancement tool.  
    Objective 8.1 Bring all full-time faculty up-to-speed with current technology in their teaching areas.  
    Objective 8.2 Introduce two new on-line courses. Increase the number of sections of on-line courses. Increase the number of web-enhanced courses.  
    Objective 8.3 Build a Mac-based teaching lab

    Accreditation or Program review activities from 2002-03 academic year.
       Representatives of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) visited the Art Department in October 2002 to review the for renewal of Membership. In a letter dated 30 May 2003, "The NASAD Commission of Accreditation voted to continue the current Membership state of the institution [APSU]," and to seek further information on how the department's Spring 2003 revised curricular plans meets TBR's mandate of a maximum 120 semester hours for undergraduate programs while also meeting NASAD's required percentages of studio (65%) and art history (%) course work. The degrees under study are the BFA, Studio Arts; BFA, Visual Communication; and the BFA, Art Education.
     
    New initiatives, activities or programs from the 2002-03 academic year.
       Continued up-grading in technology by install Smart Classroom equipement in main lecture classroom (Trahern 401) and new software in the Trahern Open Mac Lab.
       Began replacement schedule of exhausted non-technology equipement in schulpture studio.
       Updated course description for photography studio courses and studio creative development sequence to include new technology and curriculum respectively.
       Participated in initiative with Theatre Department to renovated Trahern Entrance and Lobby lighting and furnishings.
       Investigate possibilities of relocating the Goldsmith Press to provide greater teaching and outreach opportunities.
       Reviewed department's use of Center of Excellence in the Creative Arts to increase relevance of programming for department, campus, community, and state.
