Academic Program

The four-week program is under the auspices of Estudio Internacional Sampere (E.I.S.). Spanish language classes are offered at all levels from beginning through graduate. All instructors are native speakers. Estudio Sampere offers a unique group of courses in translation, interpreting, bilingual correspondence, Spanish for Executives and Bilingual Secretarial Studies for very advanced students. Arrangements for guitar, flamenco dancing, or cooking lessons may be made for an extra fee. An average of 30 hours of classes and activities are scheduled each week, with classes usually meeting in the afternoon for five hours, five days a week. Students also may concentrate on particular aspects of Spanish civilization or literature through independent study. Classes average from five to eight students per class.

Faculty

The organization and supervision of the program will be carried out by the Director, Dr. Miguel Ruiz-Avilés. Professor Ruiz-Avilés has traveled extensively in Spain. He holds degrees in Spanish and philosophy from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (PhD), the University of Kansas (M.A.) and the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez (B.A.).

Activities

During the weekday mornings and evenings, students are expected to visit museums and scenic/historic locations in Madrid and Alicante, and to attend plays, movies, sport events, lectures, etc. For a small additional fee, students have access to swimming pools and gymnasium facilities.

Excursions

While in Madrid, there will be four full-day excursions outside the capital to nearby cities and sites of interest such as Toledo, Segovia, El Palacio de Aranjuez, La Granja, El Escorial, El Valle de los Caídos, Ávila and Salamanca. While in Alicante we will visit places like the Archeological Museum and El Castillo de Santa Bárbara. Before each excursion, there will be a talk regarding the significance of the site to be visited. Students are always accompanied by Dr. Ruiz-Avilés and a tour guide. There are optional tours to other cities in Spain, the rest of Europe, northern Africa, and to the beach.

Cost

The projected cost is $4900, which includes a non-refundable application deposit of $150. Students pay in-state tuition.

  • The basic fee includes tuition for six undergraduate semester hours from Austin Peay State University.
  • Round-trip airfare from Nashville.
  • Transportation to and from airport in Madrid (if traveling with the group).
  • Full room and board for four weeks while in Madrid and Alicante.
  • Laundry services.
  • Text and materials used in courses.
  • Four cultural visits within Madrid.
  • Four one-day excursions outside Madrid.
  • Two cultural visits while in Alicante.
  • Health insurance.

Austin Peay State University reserves the right to make cancellations, date and fee adjustments and any minor changes in the program that may be required. A surcharge may be necessary if the dollar drops significantly vis-à-vis the Spanish currency (the Euro).

Lodging

Students are housed in carefully selected Spanish households, usually two per family. Alternate housing may be arranged if desired at an additional cost. Housing is within walking distance to classes or within easy access to rapid public transportation. The program fee provides for three meals a day, seven days a week while in Madrid.

Transportation and Independent Travel

Travel usually is by an American carrier. Participants in the program are expected to travel to Spain as a group and be supervised by the program director, although individual dates are flexible, and following the four-week academic session, students are free to pursue independent travel at their own expense.

Eligibility, Admission and Payment

Participants in the program must have completed successfully one year of college Spanish or the equivalent in order to be enrolled in intermediate courses although first year classes are available. Students without previous training in the language are encouraged to apply for admission to our Beginning Spanish program. All students will be tested by EIS and placed according to their training and level of proficiency. The program is open to college students in good standing, high school teachers and other qualified individuals. A non-refundable deposit of $150 must accompany the application (sent on request), and the balance is due March 1, 2009. Other necessary forms will be provided by the program director upon receipt of an application form.

Study in Spain

Estudio Internacional Sampere is located in a central section of the city, with convenient access to stores, banks and cafés. An interactive microcomputer grammar tutorial may be available to all students enrolled in beginning and intermediate courses. The school (EIS) also offers e-mail access for free.
