Taxonomy: Two of five recognized subspecies (Crother et al. 2008) occur in Tennessee. Based on the maps of Gloyd and Conant (1990) and Conant and Collins (1998), A. c. mokasen (Northern Copperhead) ranges across all of the state except extreme West Tennessee where A. c. contortrix (Southern Copperhead) resides. A rather broad zone of intergradation is recognized where the Northern and Southern subspecies merge.
Distribution: Statewide with conspicuous gaps in central and western Tennessee.
