Taxonomy: Three subspecies of
Kinosternon subrubrum are recognized:
K. s. hippocrepis (Mississipppi Mud
Turtle), K. s. steindachneri (Florida
Mud Turtle) and K. s. subrubrum
(Eastern Mud Turtle) (Iverson et al. 2008).
Populations in Tennessee belong to the subspecies
K. s. subrubrum, except in a narrow geographic corridor along the
Mississippi River where K. s. subrubrum
and K. s. hippocrepis may intergrade
(Conant and Collins 1998).
Distribution: Scattered records exist
from Hamilton and Rhea counties westward to the Mississippi River.
Current knowledge indicates the species is conspicuously absent in upper
Cumberland and Tennessee River drainages.
