Basic Nutrition: Learn how to identify what you need to eat to lose, gain or maintain your current weight. We will show you how to make healthier food choices from every food group and give you suggestions on how to get the most nutrition out of your allotted daily calories. You will learn how to balance your "energy in" with your "energy out", and we will show you resources that you can use for the rest of your life. The class length is 30 minutes, held in Foy 202.
Basic Fitness: Gain knowledge of the components of fitness, proper exercise technique and the benefits of physical activity. Exercise session components will be reviewed as well as the F.I.T. (Frequency, Intensity and Time) principle and basic principles of training. Participants will learn how to determine their target heart rate percentage range. They will also learn to identify major muscles in the body and calculate their 1 rep max. The class length is 30 minutes. Wear comfortable workout clothing. Meet in Foy 202.
Indoor Cycling: Indoor cycling is a group exercise class done on stationary bikes and set to stimulating music. Indoor cycling first started in the 1980's when cyclists wanted a way to continue training during inclement weather. Since then, it has grown and is offered in numerous fitness facilities around the world. Not only is indoor cycling a great cardiovascular workout, it is also good for muscle endurance! The class length is 30 minutes. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you free range of motion in both upper and lower body while seated. Bring a water bottle. Class meets in the Cycling Studio of the Foy Center.
Pilates: Developed by German-born Joseph Pialtes in the 1920's, Pilates combines elements of eastern and western disciplines, including yoga, Tai Chi and ancient Greek and Roman exercise protocols. Pilates is a series of movements done from a sitting, reclining, kneeling, or standing position, designed to increase strength and flexibility and release tension. Re-patterning movements and proper breathing techniques are important components of the training. Pilates is used in physical rehabilitation and is popular with those seeking to improve body conditioning. The class length is 30 minutes and meets in one of the fitness studios in the Foy Center. Wear comfortable clothing.
Rock Climbing: Join us for this introduction to rock climbing! You will learn basic techniques and skill such as belaying, knot tying and spotting. Our trained lead climbing staff will show you some basic climbing tips and wall etiquette. The class length is 30 minutes and meets at the Climbing Wall in the Foy Center. Wear comfortable clothing that gives you full range of motion.
Step: Step aerobics was innovated by Gin Miller in 1989. Since then, it ahs taken off and can be found in many different forms in fitness facilities worldwide. Step aerobics is a fun and challenging way to work on your cardio and muscular endurance. During this class you will learn basic steps most instructors use and see how they are put together into a routine. The class length is 30 minutes and meets in one of the fitness studios on the Foy Center. Wear comfortable clothing that gives you full range of motion.
• Stress Management: This workshop focuses on how to identify stressors in your life, how the body reacts to stressors, and how to block the harmful influence of stress using different relaxation and time management methods. Stress inducing behaviors such as procrastination and poor time management will be discussed. We will briefly try progressive relaxation and relaxation breathing, and learn about other strategies for stress reduction. Workshop lasts 30-45 minutes. Feel free to bring your lunch!
Yoga: Ananda Yoga, developed by Swami Krivananda who is a direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, is a classical style of hatha yoga that uses asana and pranayama to awaken, experience and begin to control the subtle energies within oneself. Its object is to use those energies to harmonize body, mind and emotions, and, above all, to attune oneself with higher levels of awareness. Ananda Yoga is a relatively gentle, inward experience, not an athletic or aerobic practice. The class length is 30 minutes and meets in one of the fitness studios on the Foy Center. Wear comfortable clothing and check out a yoga mat at the Foy Center equipment desk.
