APSU classrooms outfitted with latest technology
July 30, 2001
Catapulting instructional capabilities from the 19th century, past the 20th century and directly into the 21st century.
That's how Jim Clemmer, Austin Peay State University professor for 34 years, describes the potential effect of 30 'smart classrooms' ready for use this fall in many departments on the APSU campus. Funded by technology access fees paid by students, the project cost about $500,000. These fees are dedicated solely to providing equipment and other technological services that benefit students directly.
According to Clemmer, who coordinated the project, smart classrooms use technology familiar to most faculty and students, including videotape, computers and DVDs. But the rooms also employ newer, less familiar devices such as video LCD projectors, wireless keyboards, document cameras and sophisticated switching equipment. The classroom systems are 'smart' in that they seamlessly integrate all of the technologies to help professors provide a coherent and powerful learning experience for students.
Every classroom in Clement Building and Harned Hall is now a smart classroom, along with a number of rooms in Claxton, Kimbrough and the music/mass communication building. Some sytstems in Harned and Kimbrough are mobile, for easy movement within and between buildings.
