APSU works on information literacy
July 30, 2001
Austin Peay State University's Woodward Library is one of 23 university libraries across the nation receiving a grant to teach information literacy, or the ability to evaluate information available on the World Wide Web, in databases and on computers.
"Libraries have been heavily involved in computers and online information for some time, and we see a need to move beyond that," said Deborah Fetch, interim dean of Woodard Library. "Students need to learn how to find and use the information whether its from the Internet or electronic databases, and they need assistance to learn this."
This Association of College and Research Libraries project is funded through the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant. The grant involves librarians working with APSU faculty to integrate information literacy skills into the classroom and assess learning outcomes from the introduction of these skills.
While the process is just beginning, Fetch hopes to expand upon it by adding a multimedia development suite in the library so faculty have a place to come to prepare Powerpoint presentations, work with smart classroom technology and digitize information, as well as have the people on staff to help them.
