APSU med tech student wins national award
Once again, Austin Peay State University has received national recognition because of the excellence of its Medical Technology Program.
Tammie L. Harper, who is president of the Alpha Pi Chapter of Lambda Tau, the national medical technology honorary, was selected "Winner-First Runner Up" for the 2000 National Lambda Tau Student Scholarship Award.
The winner is a student at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Harper was nominated by her faculty adviser, Dr. Mary M. Mayo, assistant professor of biology at APSU. In her nomination, Mayo said Harper is "enthusiastic and leads by example."
According to Mayo, Harper volunteers for health screenings, including anemia screening for Head Start and kidney screening at the local Red Cross Health Fair. Mayo wrote: "Tammie accomplishes her studies, Honor Society leadership duties and volunteer activities in addition to her duties as a wife and mother of two sons."
Dr. James Thompson, director of APSU's Medical Technology Program, noted this is the second year in row that the president of Alpha Pi has received this national award. Thompson said, "Tammie is also the recipient of the APSU Lambda Tau Leadership Award for the Class of 2001, an award that is determined by election of her classmates."
Harper, who is completing clinical rotations at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital at Fort Campbell, Ky., transferred from Hopkinsville Community College.
