Graduate Program in School Psychology
An overview of what you need to achieve a specialist degree
(Ed.S.) in School Psychology.
What is School Psychology?
School psychologists are trained in education, mental health, child development and learning theory. They are problem solvers who, working with others, assist in changing environments, attitudes and systems to help children use their strengths to succeed in academic learning, social skills, and citizenship. School psychologists coordinate and evaluate the needs unique to individuals with special learning and behavior problems. They promote research-based psychological theory to assist in curriculum, instruction and school reform. This is performed through team problem solving, consultation, interventions, assessment, referral and case management.
School Psychology Training at APSU
The specialist degree (Ed.S.) in school psychology is designed to prepare professionals to work as licensed school psychologists. Applicants admitted to the program will receive a Master's degree upon completion of 35 hours of coursework. Additional coursework will lead to the Ed.S. degree and licensure as a school psychologist. Students who are willing to enroll in summer terms can complete the program in three years.
Admissions Requirements
Students are required to have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00, minimum scores of 400 on both the verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE, and two letters of recommendation. Students who meet admissions requirements may be admitted up to one month prior to the start of classes on a space-available basis.
The Psychology Department
The psychology department consists of 11 full faculty members with a diverse range of research and teaching interests. Faculty from the Department of Education also teach several courses required for completion of the Ed.S. The department strongly supports exceptional teaching and involvement of students in research projects. Opportunities for graduate assistantships are available both within the department and in departments across campus.
Employment Prospects
The American Psychological Association cited a shortage of school psychologists in the year 2000. An increased public awareness that mental health is important has led to an increased demand for school psychologists. Employment prospects remain optimal for school psychologists.
