Program News

We're pleased to share some exciting news with you - the Industrial/Organizational Psychology program is going on-line!!  Beginning in fall 2006, we are converting the I/O psychology program from an on-ground format to an on-line format.*

What does this mean for you? If you have been offered admission into our program and have accepted that offer, you will receive information this summer about the courses for which you should enroll and how to access them on-line. If you were planning to move to Clarksville, you can still do that. While the program is going on-line, the faculty would be more than happy to have you reside in Clarksville. Faculty would be willing to meet with you to discuss course content or career plans just as we would if the program were being offered in an on-ground format. (If you have applied for and been offered a graduate assistantship, you would be required to move to Clarksville to fulfill your assistantship responsibilities.) If you have not heard from us yet about your application for admission, we are continuing to make admissions decisions as applicant files are complete.

If you have been offered admission and were uncertain about how you could afford to make the move to Clarksville to continue your education that is no longer an issue. While we would welcome your presence in Clarksville, you would not be required to move to Clarksville to join our program. Consequently, we hope you are now prepared to accept the offer of admission that has come to you or may come to you in the future. If you have friends who might be interested in our program now that it is going on-line, we are still accepting applications for the fall semester so please encourage them to apply.

We are excited about this change because it offers students the chance to earn a master’s degree in psychology with a concentration in I/O psychology from a high quality state university with dedicated faculty and in a format that is more convenient and cost-effective for students, particularly those who don’t have the resources to move to Clarksville. As we make this transition, please return tot his website (http://www.apsu.edu/psychology/ioprogram.htm) for the latest information.

*APSU has granted approval to take this program online. We are currently seeking, and expect to receive, approvals from the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) for this program change

Industrial/Organizational Psychology Concentration (37 hours):

The program will educate students to design, develop, implement, and evaluate psychologically-based human resources interventions in organizations. The scientist-practitioner model will be employed in the belief that effective practice is grounded in a solid exposure to research. The primary goal of the program is to prepare graduates for entry-level positions as "master's level I/O practitioners" in business, industry, and government. The program has been developed in accordance with the Guidelines for Education and Training at the Master's Level in Industrial/Organizational Psychology published by Division 14 of the American Psychological Association.

Coursework Requirements

Admission Requirements
(College of Graduate Studies)
To pursue a master's degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology candidates must have met all general admission requirements established by the College of Graduate Studies.  These requirements include a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and academic preparation appropriate to the degree, concentration and/or specialization to be sought. Students are occasionally admitted who do not  meet the minimum requirements on a space available basis. The department of Psychology will begin making admission decisions by March 1st and will continue until July 31st for the following fall semester.

The student must furnish official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended and official scores (not more than five years old) on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  Acceptable GRE scores on the verbal (>400) and quantitative (>400) sections of the exam are required for regular admission.

Three
recommendation forms in support of the applicant must be submitted.  These recommendations need to be from undergraduate faculty member who previously taught the applicant and can verify that the student has the academic ability to do quality work at the graduate level.

Prospective international students must submit applications and complete certified copies of official transcripts, certificates, diplomas and degrees translated to English well in advance of the semester for which they seek admission.  Transfer students from foreign institutions must provide a copy of a course-by-course equivalency review performed by an educational credentials agency.  The College of Graduate Studies handles application procedures for all international students.

An international student also is required to submit proof of proficiency in the English language.  A paper-based score of 500 or a computer-based score of 173 on the TOEFL Examination is required of applicants whose native language is not English.  All international students must provide evidence of financial resources sufficient to pay their educational expenses.

Graduates of accredited colleges or universities whose previous academic work and performance indicate potential for success are encouraged to apply. GRE (Graduate Record Exam) scores are required, and applicant must also present a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on all undergraduate work pursued based on a 4.0 scale.

Financial Assistance
Graduate assistantships are available for superior students and are awarded on the basis of undergraduate GPAs, GRE results, recommendations from former professors, resumes and interviews.  Graduate assistants (GAs) are paid monthly and are required to work 20 hours per week.  Working hours are flexible and will be arranged around the GA's class schedule.

Assistantships are available for the current academic year. Stipends for assistantships are approximately $7,350. Applicants interested in a graduate assistantship must apply for admission and submit a completed Application for Graduate Assistantship to the College of Graduate Studies.  Deadline for Graduate Assistant (GA) Application* is March 1, annually.   Admission and GA application forms are available in the College of Graduate Studies, 203 Kimbrough Building, and at: www.apsu.edu/cogs/

In addition to graduate assistantships, Austin Peay offers student loans, work-study and part-time employment opportunities.  Information about these funding options are available in the Financial Aid Office at (931) 221-7907.

Fellowships are available for African-American graduate students who are residents of Tennessee.  Details about the fellowships and applications can be obtained in the College of Graduate Studies.
