Admission to the M.A. in Psychology

with concentration in

Industrial/Organizational Psychology at APSU

• Admission Requirements (College of Graduate Studies)
  
  To pursue a master's degree in psychology with Industrial/Organizational Psychology concentration candidates must have met all general admission requirements established by the College of Graduate Studies.  These requirements include meeting the requirements of the College and students must meet the following four conditions to be offered regular admission to the Psychology Department - 1)  achieved a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5 on undergraduate course work taken as part of a bachelor's degree, AND 2) achieved a minimum GRE - Verbal; score of 300, AND 3) achieved a minimum GRE-Quantitative score of 300, AND 4) attain calculated score of 2000 or greater based on the following formula:  (GPA x 400)+ GRE-v +GRE-Q >=2000.  All FOUR conditions must be satisfied to be offered regular admission.  Provisional admission may be granted to an applicant who fails to meet any of the first three conditions, but whose calculated score using the formula in condition 4 is 2000 or above.  The Psychology Department does not grant conditional admissions. The department of Psychology will begin making admission decisions by March 1st and will continue until July 31st for the following fall semester.
   
  The student must furnish official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended and official scores (not more than five years old) on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  Acceptable GRE scores on the verbal (>400) and quantitative (>400) sections of the exam are required for regular admission.
   
  Three recommendation forms in support of the applicant must be submitted.  These recommendations need to be from undergraduate faculty member who previously taught the applicant and can verify that the student has the academic ability to do quality work at the graduate level.   Prospective international students must submit applications and complete certified copies of official transcripts, certificates, diplomas and degrees translated to English well in advance of the semester for which they seek admission.  Transfer students from foreign institutions must provide a copy of a course-by-course equivalency review performed by an educational credentials agency.  The College of Graduate Studies handles application procedures for all international students.
   
  An international student also is required to submit proof of proficiency in the English language.  A paper-based score of 500 or a computer-based score of 173 on the TOEFL Examination is required of applicants whose native language is not English.  All international students must provide evidence of financial resources sufficient to pay their educational expenses.
  
  Graduates of accredited colleges or universities whose previous academic work and performance indicate potential for success are encouraged to apply. GRE (Graduate Record Exam) scores are required, and applicant must also present a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on all undergraduate work pursued based on a 4.0 scale.

• Financial Assistance
  Graduate assistantships are available for superior students and are awarded on the basis of undergraduate GPAs, GRE results, recommendations from former professors, resumes and interviews.  Graduate assistants (GAs) are paid monthly and are required to work 20 hours per week.  Working hours are flexible and will be arranged around the GA's class schedule.

Assistantships are available for the current academic year. Stipends for assistantships are approximately $7,350. Applicants interested in a graduate assistantship must apply for admission and submit a completed Application for Graduate Assistantship to the College of Graduate Studies.  Deadline for Graduate Assistant (GA) Application* is March 1, annually.   Admission and GA application forms are available in the College of Graduate Studies, 203 Kimbrough Building, and at: http://www.apsu.edu/cogs/forms.htm

Fellowships are available for African-American graduate students who are residents of Tennessee.  Details about the fellowships and applications can be obtained from the College of Graduate Studies.
