CORE COURSES FOR THE MPA in DM (15 sh)
PM 5000 Administrative and Organizational Theory (3sh) --
Examination of the scientific and theoretical foundations as well as practical
applications of administrative science and organizational theory.
PM 5230 Personnel Management and Administration (3sh) -- Analysis of
policies and procedures relating to the personnel functions of management along
with the study of classic and contemporary problems of human resources.
PM 5240 Budgeting for Disaster Management (3sh) -- Study of financial
management practices in the disaster management field, including revenues and
expenditures, and the relationship between budgets and policies.
PM 5250 Quantitative Methods of Research (3sh) -- The accomplishment of
skills at carrying out research of a quantitative nature and an understanding of
statistics and methodology will be achieved in this course.
PM 5270 Intergovernmental and NGO Behavior (3sh) -- Examines the structure and
function of intergovernmental and multijurisdictional organizations, including
non-governmental organizations.
CORE SPECIALIZATION COURSES (3sh must be taken from one of
the following)
PM 5335 Disaster Planning and Policy (3sh) -- policy analysis of disaster
planning
PM 5355 Disaster Assessment and Victimology (3sh, CRJ) -- political and
social contexts
CORE COGNATE ELECTIVES (18sh, i.e., 6 courses must be taken
from the following)
Structural Risk Assessment (3sh) -- architectural and engineering facets
of the built environment
Natural Hazards and Resource Management (3sh) --
environmental dangers and concerns
Critical Infrastructure Protection (3sh, CRJ) -- the vital sectors
necessary for societal functioning
Emergency Health Management and Epidemiology (3sh, CRJ) -- health
problems and care delivery systems
Humanitarian Operations and Refugee Management (3sh, CRJ) -- aid programs
and peacekeeping missions
Response and Recovery Administration (3sh, CRJ) -- management and legal
issues
in the aftermath
Security and Incident Management (3sh, CRJ) -- global and homeland
security prevention procedures
Disaster Crime Scene Forensics (3sh, CRJ) -- evidence collection,
processing, and scientific analysis
TOTAL: 18sh of Core plus 18sh of Elective = 36 hours total
for degree.
General courses in emergency management and disaster preparedness already exist,
as well as cognates in other disciplines. CRJ notation refers to core, special
core, or
specialization areas thought most closely related to extension of the criminal justice/homeland security
program in the PM department. These areas are currently under curricular
development as
