University of Tennessee President J. Wade Gilley has proposed establishing a metropolitan college in Chattanooga that would cater to part-time and commuter students.
The college would offer weekend and evening classes focusing on technology and business at off-campus sites.
Funding for the effort would come from savings resulting from a multimillion-dollar streamlining of UT administration, Gilley said. He recommended an initial grant of $25,000 to enable UTC to hire consultants and charge them with creating a five-year plan.
Gilley also recommended another $200,000 over five years to expand UTC's master's degree program in biologic and environmental sciences.
