Tethered hot-air balloon rides highlight full day of fabulous fun-and it's free!
September 18, 2001
If you have children, Austin Peay is where you want to be this Saturday, Sept. 22.
The nationally acclaimed children's musical entertainment group "Flumpa and Friends," recently back from an appearance at the White House, will perform during Austin Peay's Community Celebration Day, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
That group is just part of a full day of child-centered fun that also includes tethered hot air balloon rides, an "Outrageous Science Show," planetarium shows, a climbing wall, a rope bridge and an inflatable rocket ride. And it's all free
In addition to rides and entertainment, the first 1,000 children will receive-free-"Reaching New Heights" balloons, a balsam flyer gliding airplane, buttons and edible goodies. And all students get into the 3 o'clock game at no charge.
At 9 a.m., children and adults can watch a dramatic patriotic monologue by acclaimed performing artist Larry Gates.
At 10 a.m. children can see an "Outrageous Science Show" featuring Dupont scientists. Can a banana be used to drive a nail?
At 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m. on a stage in front of the Browning Building, children and parents can hop, sing-and learn-with the fabulous "Flumpa and Friends" show.
At noon and 1 p.m., you and the kids can lie on your back and study other planets or gaze at galaxies in the planetarium of the Sundquist Science Complex.
Throughout the day kids can scamper up the 30-feet-high climbing wall or enjoy a sky-high ride in a fire truck bucket, compliments of the Clarksville Fire Department. Then they can climb aboard "Airborne," an inflatable rocketship that hoists riders 20 feet into the air.
If you've always dreamed of going "up, up and away" in a hot-air balloon, this is your chance. Rides in a tethered hot-air balloon will be provided, compliments of Re/Max.
Throughout the day, get pepped up with performances by the APSU cheerleaders and dance team and other local performers. Then get down with the cool music of WAPX-FM. Stroll over for a tour of the fantastic new science building with its herbarium, planetarium…and an interactive exhibit starring not-so-sneaky snakes.
If that's not enough, sign the kids up for toys and other neat prizes as they enjoy balloon artists, face-painting, free treats and good eats.
Would you want to be anywhere else? Make plans for a day of family fun, compliments of Austin Peay State University.
