Students plan numerous events to mark 9/11
September 5, 2002
The Office of Student Life and Leadership has planned several events to commemorate Sept. 11.
A ceremony honoring the memory of those who lost their lives, survived or served will be held from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the UC Plaza. Myea Brown, president of APSU's chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, will emcee the event. Invited speakers include Dr. Sherry Hoppe, representatives of APSU's military science department, local police and fire department members and Gavin Roark, SGA President.
A four-panel Unite Our Cities mural designed by the SGA will be unveiled following Roark's remarks. Two 4-by-8-foot panels are being painted by an APSU student, an Austin Peay alumnus and Dr. Tolulope Filani, assistant professor of art. Two panels will be reserved for written expressions from attendees.
The SGA will supply postcards bearing addresses of soldiers stationed in Afghanistan to which students, staff and faculty can add notes of encouragement and support.
Adjacent, a local group, has been invited to sing a patriotic song. Dr. Richard Steffen, professor of music, along with the APSU Brass quintet, will offer a selection of national songs. Members of Zeta Phi Beta sorority will pass out red, white and blue ribbons, and Kappa Sigma will plant a tree in commemoration of the event.
Students are invited to wear their organization colors. They also are being encouraged to contact the United Way of Clarksville-Montgomery County to participate in volunteer activities during that week.
