President appoints committee to study salaries
March 12, 2001
Dr. Sherry Hoppe has appointed a committee to conduct an internal study of faculty and staff salaries. Faculty Senate President Jim Diehr says the study is "the next step" after the Mercer study, a salary equity study conducted in 1998.
The Mercer study looked at salaries at peer institutions and divisions and departments within those institutions, Diehr explains. "It compared our salary rankings to statistical norms."
The study's conclusions, that many long-time employees were underpaid compared to their peers, led to raises for many, but the study costs "a large amount of money," Diehr says. So administrators received permission from the TBR to conduct this study internally.
Savings realized from doing the study internally could be used for other purposes, including salary increases.
