November book discussion centers on politics, sexual identity

10/30/2000
October 30 , 2000

An ex-beauty queen, actress and politician makes her comeback in a campaign for governor of New York in “The Beauty Queen,” by Patricia Nell Warren. The book's central character regards homosexuals as perverts and infidels and vows to hound them until they see the light. Her crusade disrupts the gay community, provokes violence and death and, in the end, exposes her own father's long-standing homosexual liaison.

Dr. Bruce Childs, professor of art, will lead a discussion of “The Beauty Queen” at the Women's Studies Brown Bag Series from 12:30 to 1:30, Thursday, Nov. 2 at the African American Cultural Center. Everyone is invited to bring a lunch and join the discussion, whether they've read the book or not.
