Magazines pick baseball Govs as likely OVC winner

February 12, 2001

The February edition of "Baseball America" has picked the Austin Peay Govs to win the Ohio Valley Conference, as did the January edition of "Collegiate Baseball."

"We're up there," junior left-hander Mike Weel noted in the January 26 issue of "The Leaf Chronicle." But Weel says that won't affect their practice schedule. "We've got to practice hard whether we're picked first or last."

Weel was "Baseball America's" pick for OVC preseason player of the year and ‘Collegiate Baseball's--OVC preseason pitcher of the year. Weel, right-hander Dustin Smith and first baseman A.J. Ellis also were named top pro prospects by "Baseball America." Other Govs chosen to "Baseball America's" All-OVC preseason team were Ellis, third baseman Scott Kluesner, and outfielders Frank Kunich and Ben Fuller.

"Collegiate Baseball" listed Fuller, Ellis and Kunick as "Top Players to Watch" in the OVC.

In its preseason national rankings, "Baseball America" ranks Austin Peay 89th in its "Rest of the Best." No other OVC team is ranked in the top 100.

Austin Peay begins the 2001 season Feb. 17 against Xavier at Hand Park.
