Governors Fall Short
March 5, 2001
Austin Peay men's basketball team saw its season come down to one shot Saturday at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. A last-second jump shot by Eastern Illinois' Jan Thompson was knocked away by Theanthony Haymon and goaltending was called, giving Eastern Illinois an 84-83 victory.
Fourth-seeded Austin Peay (22-10) dominated throughout, leading by as many as 21 points on several occasions in the second half. They out rebounded Eastern Illinois 38-26 and led throughout until the final play.
A 3-pointer by the Panthers' Kyle Hill with 6:40 remaining sparked a 10-0 run that signaled Eastern Illinois's comeback. Hill capped the run with a 3-pointer that pulled his team within eight points at 78-70.
It seemed the Governors had the game locked up after a 10-point run keyed by six points by Jakeway gave them a 47-27 lead with 12:12 to go.
``We quit playing hard for a stretch in the second half and weren't aggressive,'' Head Coach Dave Loos said. ``We were up 18 with nine minutes to go, and you've got to hang on to that.''
Hill finished with 31 points for Eastern Illinois and Henry Domercant added 20 points.
Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year Trenton Hassell led the Governors with 21 points, while Joe Williams had 20, Haymon 18 and Nick Stapleton 11.
"I feel sorry for our guys," Loos said. "I feel terrible for them. But you have to play for 40 minutes. We played great for some 30 minutes but we didn't finish it off."
