Channel 99 leaps campus boundaries, will provide live election coverage

October 23, 2002

A television show produced by Austin Peay faculty members will provide live coverage of election results on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

The coverage will be broadcast on an expanded version of "Insight," a public affairs program produced by Dr. David Kanervo, professor and chair of the political science department, and Dr. David von Palko, professor in the department of communications and theatre.

Von Palko will serve as host and executive producer. Kanervo will be the co-host and political analyst. John Moseley, assistant professor of communication and theatre, will serve as technical director.

"This will be the third time that David Kanervo and I have provided cable coverage of local elections in Clarksville," von Palko says. "However, there is a significant difference between our prior coverage and what will happen for this election. The coverage will be a live production from the communication and theatre department studios in the music/mass communication building."

Until recently, Cable 99 has been available only on the Austin Peay campus. But with the cooperation of Charter Communications, the channel now will be broadcast to all Charter subscribers, von Palko says.

"Producing the election coverage from our facilities on campus will provide many opportunities, access to candidates' headquarters and exposure for the University among them.

"But for this production to succeed, we need a University-wide effort. Because Cable 99 has been on campus only during its existence, no more than a dozen people are aware it exists, much less that we will be providing live election coverage. We need to work together to make the Clarksville community aware of this event."
