APSU offers divorce course

September 4, 2001

Austin Peay State University's Center for Extended and Distance Education offers the course, "Parents, Children and Divorce," which meets a new state mandate requiring divorcing parents with minor children to take a four-hour course before the divorce is granted.

The father and mother do not attend class at the same time, and no children attend. The course will be offered from 5:45 to 9:45 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15 in Room 304 of the Clement Building. The course and textbook fee is $30, and preregistration is required.

Objectives of the course are to teach parents how to:
*Help children cope with divorce and feelings of loss
*Communicate more effectively with their children and former spouse
*Identify the warning signs of depression and anger in your children
*Handle the trauma children face during and after the family unit changes due to divorce or separation.
