15 students named winners of Peay Read essay, creative expression contest

9/26/2012

Fifteen first-year students at Austin Peay State University will be recognized for having best student essays or creative expression pieces (poems, art, video) on themes from “The Other Wes Moore,” a nonfiction book by Wes Moore who uses alternating narratives to take readers from heart-wrenching losses to moments of surprising redemption.

The students will be lauded for their winning entries during a dinner Sept. 27 at APSU that will feature Moore, who later that evening will deliver a public talk to more than 1,000 people in the APSU Dunn Center.

In addition, the public is invited to view the winning pieces on display at Woodward Library.

The student winners are Jack Anhalt, Rebecca Baker, Hayley Beard, Samantha Ebright, Julie Flowers, Chelsi Hardester, Gwendolyn Marie Hay, Courtney Hill, Danielle Hunter, Zanah Kent, Brandi Laurent, Jacqueline Lewis, Joshua Mayberry, Zach Puckett and Dennis Roman. All are either freshmen or transfer students during the 2012-13 academic year.

The essay contest is part of a reading initiative at APSU called The Peay Read, designed to provide a unifying experience and contribute to the academic experiences for first-year students.
