Graduate Program Overview
The mission of the Department of Music is to provide a undergraduate and graduate education that will produce skilled, knowledgeable, creative, and articulate musicians. The Department of Music seeks to fulfill its mission by providing training and experience for students preparing for careers in music performance; providing training toward the development of critical thinking in music; providing music training and teaching experience for students seeking licensure in education to help meet the need for competent music teachers in the state and region; providing education resources and musical experiences as part of a comprehensive Liberal Arts education; and providing a rich program of artistic and cultural events in conjunction with the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts to emphasize the importance of music in the lives of students and the community.

MASTER OF MUSIC (M.M.)
(32-33 semester hours)
The Department of Music offers Master of Music concentrations in music education and in performance. The newly redesigned Music Education curriculum is offered on campus for traditional students, and as a low-residency option where students can complete a majority of the courses online, with a six-hour summer residency

Individualized programs, personalized mentoring by faculty, and small classes allow for exceptional learning opportunities.
A thesis is required for music education students (3 hours). A thesis option (6 hours) may be chosen for performance and conducting, but is not required. Thesis Guidelines can be found here.
RESEARCH LITERACY REQUIREMENT
Students in all concentrations are required to take MUS 5000 (Research in Music). Music Education students will complete a 3-hour thesis, and must pass an oral examination that is given by the gradute committee at the end of the program.
In performance and conducting programs when the thesis is not elected, students will be required to submit a formal research literacy paper which will be overseen by the major teacher and approved by the student's committee. Once approved, the paper will be officially submitted to the College of Graduate Studies as documentation regarding the completion of the research literacy requirement. Students in all concentrations must also pass an oral examination which will be given by his/her graduate committee.
TYPES OF ADMISSION STATUS
Regular Admission Status will be granted to applicants who have submitted a complete application file and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and have met the additional admission requirements for their intended concentration. Master of Music students are exempt from taking the GRE. Additional admission requirements are listed below each concentration in the Master of Music degree.
