There will be two orchestras this year. Please indicate your recommendation for the orchestra that would best fit the student:

Philharmonia (Advanced)

Students in this orchestra must have studied their instruments for a minimum of four years and should be comfortable reading complex rhythms and higher positions. Sight reading should be “very good” or “excellent.” Students should meet or exceed the minimum requirements as follows:

  • Violin: ASTA CAP level 5, Suzuki Book 5 or equivalent
  • Viola, cello and bass: ASTA CAP level 4, Suzuki Book 4 or equivalent

Sinfonia (Intermediate)

Students in this orchestra must have studied their instruments for a minimum of two years and should be comfortable reading music in keys up to 3 sharps or flats. Students should meet or exceed the minimum requirements for all instruments as follows:

  • ASTA CAP level 3 or the equivalent
  • Some shifting may be required in some of the repertoire, but simplified parts may be available.

Based on the descriptions of the two orchestras above and your knowledge of the student's playing level, please recommend this student for the appropriate orchestra level.

Teachers should use their best judgment when recommending their students for the two orchestras. We want students to succeed and have the best experience possible.

Please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Crane or Dr. Lara with any questions about recommendations.
