There will be two orchestras this year. Please indicate your recommendation for the orchestra that would best fit the student:

Philharmonia (Advanced)

Students in this orchestra must have studied their instruments for a minimum of four years and should be comfortable reading complex rhythms and higher positions. Students in this orchestra may have been accepted to one of the regional or All-State orchestras or participate in youth orchestras. Music reading should be “very good” or “excellent.” Students should meet or exceed the minimum requirements as follows:

  • ASTA CAP level 4, Suzuki Book 4 or 5 (violin) or equivalent
  • Should be able to shift and read in positions

Sinfonia (Intermediate)

Students in this orchestra must have studied their instruments for a minimum of two years and should be comfortable reading music in keys up to 3 sharps or flats. Students should meet or exceed the minimum requirements for all instruments as follows:

  • ASTA CAP level 3, Suzuki Book 3 or equivalent

Based on the descriptions of the two orchestras above and your knowledge of the student's playing level, please recommend this student for the appropriate orchestra level.

Teachers should use their best judgment when recommending their students for the two orchestras. We want students to succeed and have the best experience possible.

Please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Crane or Dr. Lara with any questions about recommendations. The directors reserve the right to assign students to the group they feel is most appropriate taking into consideration the needs of the orchestras and the age and experience of the students.

If you are a director or teacher bringing several students, please rank your students in order of ability, experience and/or level. Include any comments or justifications for your rankings. This is an option that will help the faculty place the students in the most appropriate orchestra/section.
