Dr. Douglas R. Rose
Professor of Music and Department Chair
In the
spring of 2009, Douglas Rose was pleased to accept the position of
Chair of the Music Department at Austin Peay.
Dr. Rose received undergraduate degrees in music (voice) and music
education from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Rose holds
master’s degrees in choral conducting and religion (magna cum laude)
from Yale University, where he studied conducting with Marguerite
Brooks. In 1992, he completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in
choral conducting with Timothy Mount at the State University of New York
at Stony Brook. Dr. Rose has previously taught at St. Francis Xavier
University in Nova Scotia, Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and
at Albion College in Michigan.
As a professional singer, Dr. Rose has been a member of the Elmer
Iseler Singers, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and the Robert Shaw
Festival Singers. He has also performed under (or participated in
master classes with) distinguished conductors such as, Sir David
Willcocks, Helmuth Rilling, Sir Andrew Davis, Ward Swingle, Wayne
Riddell, Jon Washburn, Robert Cooper, and Lydia Adams. He has received
numerous scholarships, awards and distinctions including a grant for
advanced conducting studies awarded by the Canada Council, and a
“Teacher of the Year” award by Albion College.
Dr. Rose has been active throughout the Midwest as an adjudicator
and a clinician. He has also been contracted for clinics and conducting
engagements in Canada by choral federations in New Brunswick, Nova
Scotia, and Ontario; and in England, where he has conducted programs
featuring the Choir and Orchestra of the University of Portsmouth.
During the summer months, Dr. Rose also serves on the conducting faculty
at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lakes, Michigan.
