VALERIE OYEN-LARSEN
Adjunct Voice Instructor
Mezzo-soprano
Valerie Oyen-Larsen's musical experience runs the gamut from
principle roles in regional oratorio, opera and musical theatre
performances to entertainment for nightclubs, organizations and
groups such as the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, Korea. She has been a
featured soloist with a number of orchestras in the southeast,
including the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, and "fronts" 'jazz ensembles with equal ease. An active recitalist, she has
been heard by audiences in Austria, Korea, and numerous U.S. states, and
has also performed live on TV and radio broadcasts of varying musical genres.
Ms. Oyen-Larsen received with honors her Bachelor of Music degrees (Vocal
Performance and Music Education) from the University of North Dakota and
her Master of Music (Vocal Performance) from Austin Peay State University.
She was subsequently awarded a scholarship to study at the
Franz-Schubert-Institute in Baden bei Wien, Austria, where she received a
Performance Diploma, magna cum laude. Her coaches have included Elly Ameling,
Dalton Baldwin, Walter Berry, Jorg Demus, Ernst Haefliger, Hans Hotter, Walter
Moore, and Erik Werba, among others. She has been distinguished as a winner
in NATS and Composition regional competitions. A versatile musician, Ms.
Oyen-Larsen is an accomplished singer, pianist, organist, harpsichordist
and arranger, and she has conducted professional, university, youth and church
vocal ensembles. She has been music director and/or organist at several churches,
and has been a clinician and adjudicator at various vocal workshops and
competitions.
At APSU, Ms. Oyen-Larsen has taught applied voice, class voice, music
appreciation and directed the APSUlute Singers show choir, In previous faculty
appointments, she has also taught singers diction courses and applied piano,
in addition to conducting and accompanying responsibilities. She has held
prior adjunct faculty positions at Armstrong Atlantic State University, Methodist
College, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and an earlier position at
APSU. She is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of
Singing and the American Choral Directors Association.
