Dr. SHARON MABRY
voice

Sharon Mabry first received national recognition in the 1980 National Public Radio Art of Songs series when she was featured recitalist. Since then, her sensitive interpretation of twentieth century music has placed her in demand as recitalist, soloist with symphony orchestras and as master teacher of vocal techniques. She has performed at numerous international music festivals, including the International Music Analysis Conference in London, England and the International Congress on Women in Music. Her recordings of twentieth century music on the Owl and Coronet labels have received outstanding critical acclaim and have been aired on FM stations internationally. She can be heard on two new CD recordings, one showcasing music by Tennessee composers and another featuring works by Persis Vehar and Christina Kuzmych. Dr. Mabry also performs opera, oratorio, chamber music and traditional solo repertoire. Some of her regional opera credits include "Lola" in the Nashville Opera Association production of Cavalleria Rusticana, "Rosina" in the Barber of Seville and the "Witch" in the Chattanooga Opera's Hansel and Gretel.

Dr. Mabry has performed numerous recitals at major universities in the United States and England. Recent performances include premieres of works by Elizabeth Vercoe, Rhian Samuel, Frederic Goossen, Jeffrey Wood, Robin Holloway and Seymour Barab. In 1986 she made her critically acclaimed New York recital debut in Merkin Concert Hall, Abraham Goodman House, New York City. She has been the recipient of two major grants from the National Endowment for the Arts: a Solo Recitalist Fellowship in 1988 and a Recording Grant in 1990.

In addition to her concert career, Dr. Mabry is Professor of Music at Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, Tennessee where her academic record won her the University's highest award to creativity, the Richard M. Hawkins Award. Since 1985, she has been a featured writer for the NATS Journal with her column, "New Directions", which discusses trends in contemporary music. She holds the bachelor of music degree from Florida State University where she studied with Elena Nikolaidi and master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees from George Peaboby College for Teachers where she studied with Louis Nicholas. As a scholarship recipient to the prestigious Franz-Schubert-Institut in Austria, she studied with Walter Moore, Erik Werba, Hans Hotter, Norman Shetler and Brigitte Fassbaender. Her duties at Austin Peay include teaching private voice and vocal pedagogy, coordinating the Dimensions New Music Series, and directing the graduate programs in music.
