Bernard H. Flythe is the assistant professor of tuba and euphonium at Austin
Peay State University. Mr. Flythe received a bachelor of music degree from the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He earned his master of music and
specialist in music degrees from The University of Michigan.
Mr. Flythe’s principal tuba teachers include Fritz Kaenzig, professor of tuba
and euphonium at The University of Michigan, Robert Leblanc, visiting professor
of tuba at The University of Michigan, David Lewis, principal tubist of the
North Carolina Symphony, Wesley Jacobs, principal tubist of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra, and Michael Sanders, principal tubist of the Saint Louis Symphony.
Prior to joining the APSU faculty, Mr. Flythe taught at the University of
Toledo and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also served on
the faculties of the University of Michigan All State Program at Interlochen,
the University of Michigan Summer Arts Institute, and the UNC-Greensboro Summer
Music Camp. During the past ten years, Mr. Flythe established private studios of
middle school and high school low brass students in Michigan, Georgia, and
Tennessee.
As a freelance performer, Mr. Flythe has performed with the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Nashville Symphony. During
the 1992-1993 season, he served as the acting principal tubist with the North
Carolina Symphony. Mr. Flythe has performed with many chamber ensembles
including the Detroit Chamber Winds, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Brass
Quintet, and the North Carolina Symphony Brass Quintet.
Mr. Flythe has received a number of honors including selection as a
semifinalist in the 1998 Leonard Falcone International Tuba Artist Competition.
Among his other awards are selection as principal tubist of the 1994
International College All-Star Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, the North Carolina
winner of the 1991 Music Teachers National Association Solo Recital Competition,
and the 1991 UNC-Greensboro School of Music Presser Scholar.
