Dunn Center and Govs Stadium

An overview of the athletic and exhibit areas of the Winfield Dunn Health and Physical Education Building and the Governors Stadium
    (Layout)
    (Capacity/Equipment)

Highlights

With its 132,000 square feet, the Winfield Dunn Health and Physical Education Building has been the home court of the Govs and Lady Govs since 1973, when ground was broken on the $5.3 million structure. Crowds cheer on Austin Peay’s indoor athletics teams from a 7,535-seat stadium sphere. Named in honor of former Gov. Winfield Dunn, who was a strong supporter of sports and education, the center includes an indoor track, batting cage, multipurpose practice and rehabilitation facilities, APSU’s athletics department and weight and locker rooms. It also houses several classroom-laboratories and the Dave Aaron Arena, which accommodates the University’s basketball and volleyball games and convocation ceremonies.

Governors Stadium, with stadium seating for 8,200, proclaims Peay Pride with the University’s stylized logo emblazoned crisply in red on its NCAA regulation-size field. APSU’s football, track and cross-country events have been well attended since the arena was built by the city of Clarksville in 1946. Undergoing periodic renovations to modernize playing surfaces and meet fan needs, the stadium includes a rubberized track and field area, ticket booths, an officials’ room and press box.

Location

The Dunn Center is located on Drane Street, across from the tennis courts and ROTC Armory and next to Raymond C. Hand baseball field.

Govs Stadium is one block over from the center, in between Summer and Henry streets. It is across from the Shasteen Building and adjacent to Burt Elementary School.

Parking

Free parking, with handicap access, is offered in front of the Dunn Center. Additional parking is located across Drane Street, behind the Armory, in the Armory lot.

Free parking, including handicap access spots, for the Govs Stadium is available in two lots on either side of the stadium.

Handicap Access

An elevator, exterior and interior ramps and wheelchair seating provide handicap access to the Dunn Center. Govs Stadium offers indoor and outdoor ramps and separate sections for wheelchair seating on either side of the stadium.

Multimedia

Both complexes are wired throughout with fiber optics and broadband cabling to provide computer hookups to Internet and networked services in their classrooms, offices and athletics and exhibit areas.

They also have a wide range of audiovisual offerings such as state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, television monitors, videocassette and DVD players, overhead and slide projectors and a portable 8-by-8 projector screen. Other amenities include podiums, microphones and multidimensional tables and chairs.
In addition to a computerized side scoreboard, the Dunn Center offers a central suspended scoreboard with real-time score, play period and time tracking. The electronic scoreboard in Govs Stadium includes these features as well as a message area.

Classrooms

Five classroom-laboratories are available in the Dunn Center with full multimedia and audiovisual capabilities to facilitate meetings and orientations.

Locker Rooms

Dunn Center locker rooms (one male and one female) include showers and meeting areas with seating and chalkboards. Towels and laundering service are available by special arrangement.

Govs Stadium houses two dressing areas, with showers in the visitor’s room. An official’s room includes a shower and television and VCR hookups.

Dance Floor and Staging

The Dunn Center’s 17,000-square-foot Maple-wood playing surface doubles as a dance floor as is, or may be covered with a supplied floor shell.

Catering

In addition to refrigeration and warming equipment, both complexes offer full-service food and beverage providers to match your event. For a casual or sporty motif, concessions are available, supplying hot dogs and nachos and all paper serving items. Or for a more formal experience, Aramark provides attendants, linens and a menu that ranges from specialty boxed lunches to gourmet buffets.
