APSU Science ExpOlympics - 2000
Activity Event - McCord 110
Dr. R. Gostowski (Chemistry Department)
Participants will have an opportunity to produce a chromatogram they can wear. The ink in most markers is composed of various dyes combined to yield the desired color. Using chromatography, these dyes may be separated on the basis of their individual retention times. During a development process, a solvent is allowed to travel up the shirt. The dyes present will partition themselves between the mobile phase (solvent) and the stationary phase (t-shirt). After drying, spots will remain indicating the progress made by each dye. In addition to providing a means to separate different substances, this process produces an artistic result.
Participants must bring a white 100% cotton t-shirt that has been washed!
